vinegar myths worth debunking

Over the years, our culture has built up a mythology about vinegar for its healing techniques. Some believe that vinegar is the quick fix for everything, and marketers have tried to claim that vinegar can cure disease such as diabetes, obesity and cancer. Is it too good to be true or just another popularized myth?

It’s not easy to tell the difference between fact and fiction. To help you identify the truth, let’s debunk some of the common myths regarding vinegar — more specifically apple cider vinegar (ACV).

Myth 1: ACV Helps Burn Fat

False. Although ACV may help a weight-loss program, studies do not yet show that it will burn fat. In one study, researchers published trial results in “European Journal of Clinical Nutrition” showing that the acetic acid in ACV delayed the break down of carbohydrates into sugar, and increased the feeling of satiety longer than the second group tested who did not consume the vinegar. ACV was also shown to balance glucose levels after meals, resulting in less cravings for other empty calorie foods, allowing for more progress in weight management programs.

Myth 2: ACV Balances Blood Sugar Levels

Truth. One study, conducted at the Nutrition Department of Arizona State University by Dr. Carol S. Johnston and Andrea M. White, PhD, surveyed 11 people afflicted with type 2 diabetes. The research found that taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar right before bed lowered the blood sugar levels of these individuals by four to six percent by morning.

The way in which apple cider vinegar works in the body is complex. Although the mechanisms of vinegar are un-clear, some experts think it slows down absorption of carbohydrates into the blood by delaying the breakdown of starches into sugars. Other studies, such as the one conducted by Dr. Johnston, believe that apple cider vinegar helps lower the post-meal blood sugar of people with a high level of insulin resistance. In the study, Dr. Johnston gave subjects – some with insulin resistance and some without – 20 milliliters of apple cider vinegar and 40 milliliters of water. The research found that the after-meal blood sugar levels of the subjects with insulin resistance lowered by 34 percent when they drank the apple cider vinegar.

Myth 3: ACV Benefits Cholesterol Balance

Truth and Myth. If you consider that rat testing results may translate similarly for humans, ACV may have positive effect on balancing cholesterol levels. A study on rats conducted by Japanese scientists found that vinegar reduced cholesterol levels and triglycerides by a statistically significant amount.

But it’s worth considering that rats have a different digestive process from humans, and there has not been a test to see if vinegar has a similar benefit in people. It doesn’t hurt to increase your vinegar intake, but there are other homeopathic remedies that already have proved they can help lower cholesterol in tests using humans.

Myth 4: ACV Improves Blood Pressure

Truth and Myth. Again, assuming that an animal study may translate to the same results for humans, a clinical trial published in the December 2001 of “Bioscience BioTechnol Biochem” tested rats by giving them a long-term administration of vinegar or acetic acid (a major component of vinegar). The research concluded that the acetic acid in the vinegar helped lower the blood pressure.

Conclusion

These studies break or make these vinegar myths. The truth to some claims in ACV may be helpful in assisting health goals. It is worth noting that ACV must be diluted if you add vinegar to your own daily health routine. For those who chug it straight followed by a glass of water, they may risk damage to their esophagus and tooth enamel. To prevent this, dilute the vinegar prior to consumption. If the tartness is difficult to tolerate, add organic, raw, unfiltered honey to sweeten the taste.

Medication, regular exercise and healthy eating habits are the cornerstones of diabetes control. Nothing will take their place, but many have an interest in consuming vinegar to give them an edge in controlling their blood glucose. Research suggests that vinegar may reduce blood glucose in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

One study, conducted at the Nutrition Department of Arizona State University by Dr. Carol S. Johnston and Andrea M. White, PhD, surveyed 11 people afflicted with type 2 diabetes. Before changing your diet, supplements or any lifestyle factors, discuss your plans with your health care provider. A single change may require additional modifications to your medications or other areas of your treatment plan.

Before you get started, here are tips when consuming our fruit vinegar beverages:

• Make sure to choose a vinegar that is organic and unpasteurized.
• Use a tablespoon of raw, organic apple cider vinegar or fruit vinegar substitute in a small glass of water three times per day. Take your dose about half an hour before meals. Do this 30 minutes before your meal preferably.
• Drink it with a straw to protect your tooth enamel.
• If you experience any burning or nausea, either reduce the amount of fruit vinegar concentration or try drinking it after meals.

There are many home remedies for insomnia. Honey and apple cider vinegar combine into easy-to-make tonic that will help improve sleep quality.

The importance of quality sleep cannot be overstated — from keeping your appetite in check to regulating your blood pressure and cholesterol, the proper amount of sleep ensures your body is functioning at its best. If you’re troubled with insomnia and inadequate sleep, read on to learn the benefits of vinegar for insomnia.

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. People with insomnia may experience difficulty falling asleep or waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep.

Insomnia can be caused by a variety of factors including stress, pain or mental disorders. Stress can result from a variety of sources such as difficulty with school, social issues, family issues or changes to your regular routine like moving or changing schools. Insomnia can be short-term, but it can become long-term if the underlying cause is not addressed or healthy sleep hygiene is not employed.

How Does Vinegar Treat Insomnia

For centuries, vinegar has been used as a remedy for insomnia, as well as a disinfectant and antibiotic. Apple cider vinegar, in particular, is used more often than regular white vinegar for the amino acids inside that help combat fatigue and for its better taste. As an acid, apple cider vinegar helps regulate digestion and break down fatty acids, and release tryptophan.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that regulates growth and synthesizes proteins. It is not produced by the body and is absorbed through nutrients and food, and is the only substance the body can convert into serotonin. When levels of serotonin are high, your mood and sleep improves. Serotonin is also used to make melatonin, a hormone that helps to control your sleep and wake cycles and to promote sleepiness.

How to Drink Apple Cider Vinegar for Insomnia

Author of “The Healing Powers of Vinegar,” Cal Orey recommends 2 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with honey as an effective tonic to treat insomnia. This honey & vinegar tonic can either be taken with a spoon or mixed with water and consumed as drink an hour before bed.

Honey compliments this tonic as a natural, healthy and side-effect free remedy for insomnia. Much like sugar, honey causes a rise in insulin, which releases serotonin, a neurotransmitter that improves mood. The body converts serotonin into melatonin, which as mentioned above, is a chemical compound that regulates the length and quality of sleep. The key difference is in honey’s gradual production and controlled release of insulin, which avoids those sudden spike and crashes of energy caused by pure cane sugar.

Maintaining a delicate acid-alkaline balance is essential for your health. Everything from healthy cells to cancer cells is affected by potential hydrogen (pH). Proper pH varies throughout your body but as with most health-related barometers, balance is everything. The health of our skin is no exception.

Some of us spend a considerable amount on skincare products with high claims and unsatisfactory results. Others of us, see results, but not for long term. The best way to heal your skin is from the inside out. This means what we put into our bodies affects our skin even more than what we put on it.

If you have poor skin, the cause is likely due to problems with digestion and detoxification. Boost your skin elasticity and slow the aging-process with fruit vinegar. To help you get started, let’s take a look at the healing properties of fruit vinegar.

5 Beauty Tips of Drinking Fruit Vinegar

It Fights Bacteria and Fungus – Fruit vinegar has antimicrobial, antifungal and antiseptic properties that prevent and eradicate strands of bacteria that can cause acne. Drinking fruit vinegar nourishes your gut and flushes out toxins, helping to fight breakouts. Let’s take a look at the relationship.

Your gut and skin health are strongly connected. Poor nutrition and an imbalanced microbiota can lead to acne. For example, a diet high in processed carbs and low in nutrients increases harmful bacteria and reduces good bacteria in your gut. This imbalance leads to inflammation on your skin and increases the risk of acne.

A poor digestion can also make you break out. Sub-optimal digestion prevents your body from eliminating toxins properly, forcing it to eliminate them through other systems, such as you skin. To balance this out, fruit vinegar can:

  • Increase your stomach acid, which improves your digestion and increases the absorption of nutrients from your food. Stomach acid helps your body breakdown food properly.
  • Reduce the harmful bacteria in your gut, thanks to its antimicrobial and antifungal properties.
  • Gently cleanse your liver and flush out toxins.

It Has Potent Antioxidants –  Fruit vinegar is high in polyphenols (beneficial plant compounds), such as gallic acid, catechin, epicatechin, cholorogenic acid, and caffeic acid that protect your skin from oxidative stress that causes early aging. Each of these have its own unique properties in skin health.

  • Gallic acid decreases dryness and wrinkles and lightens the skin.
  • Catechins and epicatechins prevent free radical damage.
  • Chlorogenic acid protects your skin cells from UVB damage.
  • Caffeic acid reduces inflammation, prevents skin carcinogenesis and may support wound healing.

It is a Natural Source of Potassium and Enzymes –  Fruit vinegar is a naturally high source of potassium and enzymes. Potassium, in particular, is important for building youthful, healthy tissues. Many people who have potassium deficiency are more likely to have dark circles under the eyes, chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, arterial and heart problems, arthritis, kidney stones, and Crohn’s disease. Signs of potassium deficiency include fatigue, achy bones and muscles, tired eyes, itchy eyes, lack of mental alertness, and dry scalp and brittle hair.

It Balances the PH Levels of Your Skin –  Fruit vinegar has a pH similar to your skin, between 4.25 and 5. This means it will preserve your skin’s pH and won’t disturb the acid mantle. This mantle protects your skin from bacteria and outside pathogens and makes it less vulnerable to environmental damage (smog, sun and wind). It also keeps your skin moisturized, balances the natural oils of your skin and inhibits the growth of foreign bacteria and fungi. It is imperative to balance your skin’s pH in order to maintain healthy skin.

It is Rich in Acids Beneficial for Your Skin – Fruit vinegar is a great source of organic acids such as acetic, lactic, ascorbic, citric, malic, propionic, succinic, and tartaric acid, which help kill bacteria and nourish your skin.

  • Acetic acid is highly antibacterial and it’s the main ingredient found in vinegar.
  • Lactic acid also helps to increase the firmness and thickness of the skin and reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, increases collagen production, increases hydration, prevents wrinkles and reverses UVB damage. It also has anti-inflammatory effects and reduces discoloration.
  • Citric and malic acid have anti-aging effects.

drink young scent beverages after every meal

Fruit vinegar is a nutritional powerhouse of microbes (live “good” bacteria), antioxidants and enzymes to the gut, increasing nutrient absorption. Rich in B-vitamins, amino acids and acetic acid, fruit vinegar has been shown to benefit the body in several ways (i.e. reduced blood sugar levels, increased metabolism). Its unique set of nutrients also benefit the body in weight loss and anti-diabetic effects. Here are 4 reasons why you should drink fruit vinegar with every meal.

Lowers Blood Glucose and Insulin Response

Drinking fruit vinegar before each meal can greatly help in cases of diabetes and pre-diabetes as it normalizes the blood sugar levels and the insulin function. Fruit vinegar has anti-glycemic properties to help reduce blood sugar levels. Its acetic acid lowers blood sugar by preventing the complete digestion of complex carbohydrates. One theory is that vinegar helps inactivate some of the digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates into sugar — slowing down the conversion of complex carbohydrates into sugar from a meal into your bloodstream. As a result, this gives your body more time to digest and absorb the sugar out of your blood, preventing sugar levels from spiking.

Increases Calcium Absorption

Fruit vinegar is high in acetic acid, which can increase the body’s absorption of important minerals from the foods we eat. Drinking fruit vinegar in meals or even drinking a mild tonic of vinegar and water (up to a tablespoon in a glass of water) just before or with meals can improve your body’s ability to absorb the essential minerals locked in foods.

Fruit vinegar may be especially useful to women, who generally have a hard time absorbing all the calcium their bodies need to keep bones strong. Many women (and men) suffer from a condition called lactose intolerance that makes it difficult to digest the sugar in milk. As a result, they may suffer uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms, such as cramping, when they consume diary products. These women often look elsewhere to supplement their dietary calcium needs.

Leafy greens are good sources of calcium, but some contain compounds that inhibit calcium absorption. Drinking fruit vinegar or adding a few splashes of vinegar in raw or vinaigrette for, on their greens may very well allow them to absorb more valuable calcium.

Adds Flavor, Not Calories

Fruit vinegar contains very few calories — 25 in a half a cup! If you’re looking to lose weight, using vinegar in place of mayonnaise whenever you can will help you make a serious impact in calorie (and fat) intake.

Fruit vinegar can also help you add flavor to your dessert without compromising flavor, and cut calories, too. Use a splash of fruit vinegar to bring out the sweetness and flavor of fruit-inspired desserts without any added sugar. Try it on other fruits that you might sprinkle fruit on — you’ll be surprised at the difference a bit of fruit vinegar can make (in depth of flavor, too). Can’t imagine the combination? Try it for yourself!

Promotes Weight Loss

Fruit vinegar stimulates digestion. The acetic acid helps with digestion of protein, the building blocks for hormones. One such hormone is growth hormone, which is instrumental in breaking down fat cells. By drinking fruit vinegar, the increased acid in your stomach before a meal can help digestion and increase the availability of protein for hormone synthesis.

The increased protein helps the formation of growth hormone, which keeps the body’s metabolism going while we’re at rest. The properties of fruit vinegar also reduce the amount of time that fats remain in the digestive tract — increasing metabolism and managing a healthy weight.

How to Drink Fruit Vinegar for Weight Loss

Mix 2 teaspoons of any of our beverages with 8 ounces (oz) of water before or after meals, 2 to 3 times a day. Drink it with a straw to protect your tooth enamel. If you experience any burning or nausea, either reduce the amount of fruit vinegar concentration or try drinking it after meals.
